Wakjira Takala Dibaba, PhD
Dr.-Ing Wakjira Takala Dibaba is a highly accomplished researcher and academician specializing in hydrology. He earned his PhD in hydrology from Rostock University, Germany, and an MSc in hydraulic engineering and a BSc in water resources and environmental engineering from Jimma University, Ethiopia. His educational journey also includes a postgraduate diploma in hydraulic engineering in river basins from the Hydraulic Research Institute, Egypt. His research contributions are noteworthy, evident from his numerous publications in peer-reviewed journals. Notable publications include studies on extreme precipitation prediction, climate
modeling and climate change impacts, modeling hydrological processes, eco-hydrological restoration, soil erosion and sediment yield assessment, watershed management, flood hazard mapping, land surface temperature, and urban heat flux. His research interests also include climate vulnerability and risk management, soil carbon sequestration potential in climate-smart agriculture, integrated water resources management in the transboundary river basins, and the application of GIS and remote sensing in conservation mapping and nature-based solutions for climate resilience and hydro-meteorological risk reductions. In addition to his academic pursuits, Dr.-Ing Wakjira contributed to funded research projects as principal and co-investigator. Some of the projects are Strategic Plan for Promoting Participatory and Integrated Upper Omo-Gibe River Basin Management, Eco-hydrological Integrated Solution for Enhancing the Socioeconomic and Ecological Resilience of Gilgel Gibe Catchment, and Assessing soil carbon sequestration potential in Ethiopia of Doyogena Climate Smart Villages (CSVs) under different climate change scenarios. His commitment to advancing knowledge in eco-hydrology and water resources positions him as a valuable contributor to both academia and environmental and sustainability research. Recognized for his outstanding contributions, he has received institutional awards, including being named an outstanding researcher of the Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Jimma University in 2021.
