
Bahiru Haile Aboye, PhD
Dr. Bahiru Haile Aboye is an Assistant Professor at Jimma University’s College of Social Sciences and Humanities, Ethiopia. He holds a PhD in Urban and Regional Planning from the University of Gondar, an MA in Urban and Regional Planning from Addis Ababa University, and a BEd in Geography from Debub University. With over two decades of experience in higher education, Dr. Aboye has taught extensively in the fields of human geography, urban and regional planning, and urban development studies. His research expertise lies at the intersection of political ecology, urban morphology, and the spatiotemporal dynamics of peri-urban landscape resilience and vulnerability. He is highly proficient in generating and analyzing spatial data derived from satellite imagery, aerial photography, and cartographic sources, as well as integrating non-spatial socioeconomic and environmental datasets from diverse rural and urban contexts. His technical skills include advanced geospatial technologies, such as ArcGIS, ERDAS Imagine, ENVI, while statistical software includes SPSS, Stata, R, GWR, and SAS. His research themes include cropping intensity and diversity, peri-urban food insecurity, urban ecological transitions, farm factor variations in land use conversion, and nature-based climate solutions. Dr. Aboye presented his research findings at regional, national, and international conferences. He has also received awards and certificates from various higher education institutions. His findings have influenced a paradigm shift in policy discourse, from viewing peri-urban zones as mere urban land reserves to recognizing their potential for urban food self-sufficiency and climate mitigation. He has published more than ten peer-reviewed articles in Scopus-indexed journals. He has also reviewed over 20 international scientific manuscripts, a commitment to advancing high-impact research. Currently, Dr. Aboye serves as co-editor of the Journal of Environmental Management. In addition to his academic achievements, Dr. Aboye has secured and led more than three small grants that convened interdisciplinary research teams to tackle pressing environmental and urban challenges. His leadership in these initiatives reflects a deep commitment to collaborative, solution-oriented science and the pursuit of sustainable urban futures.
