Dessalegn Obsi Gemeda (PhD)

Dr. Dessalegn Obsi Gemeda is an associate professor at Jimma University College of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine, Ethiopia. He holds a PhD in climate change adaptation and mitigation from Jimma University, an MSc in Geo-information Science from Wageningen University in the Netherlands, and a BEd in Geography and Environmental Studies from Jimma University. Dr. Gemeda specializes in climate change adaptation and mitigation, geospatial technologies, environmental monitoring and assessment, and biodiversity conservation. With over 15 years of teaching experience at a higher education institution with a focus on climate change, environmental science, and geographic information systems, and remote sensing. He has over 10 years’ experience in applying geospatial techniques to assess and address environmental issues such as land cover dynamics, climate change dynamics, agricultural and hydrological drought assessment, land surface temperature, and urban heat island effects, among others. The author also studies urban expansion and its effect on land use and land cover changes. He has performed comprehensive analysis on urban heat island dynamics, urban green space suitability, and the correlation of forest and wetland with land surface temperature. His research significantly contributed to the understanding of environmental challenges, and his findings have been widely cited. He also has good experience in project management, both small grants and collaborative mega projects. Moreover, the author is working with multi-stakeholders to bring sustainable solutions to environmental problems, mainly climate change. He has published more than 80 articles in peer-reviewed journals. Besides teaching and research, he serves as an associate editor for the Discovered Applied Science journal (Springer Nature) and the Journal of Agriculture and Livestock Farming. He has also served as a guest editor for special issues in Land Journal (MDPI) and an academic editor for PLOS ONE.
